How Keeping a Consistent Routine Can Significantly Improve Your Life

If you look at the self-help section of any book store, you’ll notice that there are a huge number of different titles on offer, and a huge number of different areas of focus.

Some books will have a lot to say about the best ways to handle and think about your finances. Others will focus specifically on things that you can do to improve your mindset in one way or another. Still, others will emphasise the importance of effective planning and goal setting — or, on the other hand, of keeping your attention centred in the present moment.

Whatever it is you want to do in life, ranging from having a career as a freelance writer to looking into services such as IT outsourcing in Ukraine to help your business venture, one of the best “self-help” tips may just be to maintain a consistent routine.

Here are some ways that keeping a consistent routine can improve your life.

Making You Significantly More Energetic and Helping You to Sleep Better

Having a consistent sleep-wake routine — in other words, going to sleep at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning — is one of the most important things to get right when it comes to ensuring that you get the most restful sleep possible.

Your circadian rhythm is naturally impacted to a very significant degree by the stability and consistency of your routine. By going to sleep and waking up at different times each night, you may be replicating some of the effects of jet lag for yourself, day-by-day.

Suffice to say, the better you sleep, the more energetic you will be as a whole.

Removing Resistance to Getting Started with Important Tasks

It’s always much easier to get started with a particular chore or task if you’re in the habit of working on that chore or task at a particular time each day.

This is largely because activities that have become habits become a lot more “automatic” in a sense, and don’t require as much conscious control in order to undertake. It’s as if we end up creating certain “tracks” for ourselves, and then just follow those tracks, when we establish habits.

Many significant tasks in life — from work to budgeting — can be taxing on our willpower. Routine can help to remove resistance to getting started on those important tasks.

Helping You to Better Notice Subtle Changes in Your Daily Routine

When your daily routine is quite stable and consistent as a whole, you will tend to be in a much better position to notice subtle changes in your thinking and mood — and to identify what may be causing those changes.

On the other hand, if there are too many shifting variables in your day-to-day life — such as if you eat different foods at different times each day, sleep at different times each day, get wildly differing levels of physical activity each day, and so on — it can be impossible to figure out what your “baseline” actually is, under any given set of conditions.
